Statementing - help from the school & LA

As a parent/carer, if you have any concerns about your child’s progress at school either educationally, socially or behaviourally then the first point of call is the class teacher/tutor. 

The school’s SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) oversees all the children with learning difficulties and should also be contacted. Depending on the problem various courses of action should be implemented to address the difficulties. 

The OAASIS information sheet ‘Special Educational Needs?’ explains all of the above clearly and simply. It also lists books written by professionals and parents which give invaluable advice, and organisations that can offer advice and support.  

All schools (and LAs - Local Authorities) follow the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. This clearly sets out the necessary requirements and provisions for SEN children. It covers the current Education Act, Disability Discrimination Act, Human Rights Act, SEN and Disability Act.

The independent Parent Partnership Office set up by your LA is there to help you with all your schooling issues. Your local school will have the contact details or visit the website www.parentpartnership.org.uk for your local one. 

Legal help

If you are experiencing problems in obtaining the right help for your child at school or  LA, our information sheet on Legal Help contains information on organisations with trained and experienced staff who offer free help and advice on education rights and who will often support you through meetings and paperwork.
