what to do?
If after reading our
learning disability information sheets
or talking to others you suspect that your child, pupil or someone you know has autism, Asperger Syndrome or another learning difficulty then what should you do next?
Think back to when you first started noticing problems and differences and write down a brief outline of all your concerns.
Visit your GP
to discuss your concerns and ask to be referred to a specialist or paediatrician for assessment and diagnosis.
Speak to the class teacher
to see if there are problems at school too and ask for an Educational Psychologist to assess your child.
Be warned
– with either route there may well be a lengthy wait for a diagnosis.
The other alternative
is to seek a private assessment and diagnosis, this can be expensive but can avoid a long wait, please
call OAASIS
as we have a list of centres.
Or perhaps your child or pupil has recently received a diagnosis and you don’t know what is the next step and what help they should be getting?
Please download our information sheets and
First Guides
that we provide which will explain the condition, some of the problems that will occur and give other contacts and websites for more specific information. If your child is experiencing problems at school either academically, socially and behaviourally then we can advise on the help that should be offered including the
Statutory Assessment and Statementing process
.
Please visit our
Publications page
